It was Swami Vivekananda, the chief disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, who carried the message of harmony of all religions and catholicity of his Master to various parts of the world. After his return from the west, Swami Vivekananda started the Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission with renunciation service as its twin ideals in 1897 at Belur Math, Kolkata. Swami Vivekananda, the great patriotic saint of India, was the first monk in the history of our country who felt deeply for the welfare of our women. He believed that unless their condition is improved through education,the rejuvenation

of the country was a far cry. Work for women is best done by women only. Keeping in view this fact, he wanted to establish a Math for women with Holy Mother, Sri Sarada Devi as its center.
However, his idea could not take shape at that time because of lack of education among women and the prevailing social conditions.
Fifty years after his passing away, in 1954 the year of Holy Mother’s Birth Centenary, Sri Sarada Math came into existence. The opening of Sri Sarada Math, as contemplated by Swami Vivekananda added a new and very significant chapter to the socio-religious history of India.

On the 1st January, 1959, on the birthday of Holy Mother, eight senior members of the Sarada Math were invested with Sannyasa by Swami Sankarananda, who was then President of the Ramakrishna Math.

Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Association was registered with the object of carrying on educational, cultural, charitable and similar activities among women and children, looking upon them as veritable manifestations of the Divine irrespective of caste, creed and nationality. At present the Math and Mission runs 32 centres in different parts of India and abroad.
